Books! The July Edition.....in July

Well, hell. I'm still reading A Nameless Witch. Nothing's changed. This month I haven't had as much time for reading as I usually do. Homework + Overtime = Exhausted. At any rate, to make up for the lack of new booktastic goodness....please enjoy this photo of a hedgehog taking a bath.

In addition, I will share with you a delicious drink recipe I recently came across. It's called a Mallard-tini. Pour a giant mug of vodka. Add two baby ducks. Enjoy. (Remember, the ducks are garnish only. Don't drink them. Release them gently in a pond. And don't actually put them in a cup of alcohol first. Put them in a cup of clean, room-temperature water. Drink the vodka directly from the bottle instead.)

Books!....The June Edition (In July)

I'm a few days behind on my June edition of "what I'm reading", but here we go.

Not as many entries for this month, as one book in particular took longer than I expected.

What I've finished:

Gerald's Game, by Stephen King

This book was very good but a tough, tough read for me. It took a long time for me to read through because I kept having to take breaks due to some really, what's the word I'm looking for?....intense scenes. It was very intense, or at least I found it to be so, also very intriguing and with a lot of unexpected turns.

What I'm reading now:

A Nameless Witch, by A. Lee Martinez

I'm about a third of the way through this book, and let me tell you- it is fabulous so far. A. Lee Martinez is the author of another book I just love, Gil's All Fright Diner. These books are a great, fun mix of comedy and horror. If you're a fan of Christopher Moore, as I am, there's a great chance you'll enjoy A. Lee Martinez.

In celebration of my continuing voyage through the awesome journey of The Mighty Book of Boosh, by Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt, as previously discussed, I am again going to post some slashy (varying degrees) pics of the authors now.

Yum!! :D These two make the world a better place for me to live in, just by their existence.

As for books up next.....I'm planning to either read another King book, which may possibly be Rose Madder or possibly a different one, or perhaps if I get a chance to look for it at the library, the first of the "Sookie Stackhouse" books, by Charlaine Harris. I'm a huge True Blood fan and have been meaning to give the first of the series a try.

Books!....the May Edition

Books I've recently finished:

If you read April's book-themed post, you may recall that I was reading Wonder and Pomosexuals, and preparing to read The Year of the Flood after that. I have now finished those three books and will review them in this month's book post.

Wonder, by Robert J. Sawyer

This third book in the WWW trilogy did not fail to amaze and delight. Robert J. Sawyer is my absolute favorite author, and every book he's written is just fabulous. This trilogy, about a consciousness developing in the World Wide Web, is a thoughtful and fascinating take on its subject matter. It is filled with characters who are realistic and engaging. I had the great honor of meeting Mr. Sawyer at this year's Phoenix Comicon this past weekend and was able to attend a fascinating lecture he gave on "The Science of Consciousness", where he spoke about some of the things he has learned while researching these and other of his works- This author's mind is like a fountain of never-ending awesomeness. His plot-lines are mind-expandingly awesome and his books are always filled with characters of such vividness, including little pop-culture details and nuances that are just delicious. One character in this trilogy that I particularly enjoyed is a lesbian who has a hobby of making male/male slash vids of her fav TV characters! The man was already my favorite author of all time, but I had to award him like a million extra coolness points for that! ;-)


Pomosexuals, edited by Carol Queen and Lawrence Schimel, with preface by Kate Bornstein

When I wrote April's post I was almost to the end of this book, and so I feel I gave a pretty good review of it already. Suffice it to say that the last few pages were as good as the rest of the book, and that it's a fascinating and fabulous book and you should definitely read it, if you have not already. If your definition of either your gender or your sexuality, or both, takes more than a word or short phrase to explain, then this is the book for you....and if it doesn't, then you'll probably like the book anyways cause it's a really interesting read! :D

The Year of the Flood, by Margaret Atwood

This book was spectacular. This is the second Margaret Atwood book that I've read and I'm becoming quite a fan. This book is a sequel to Oryx and Crake, and if you enjoyed that book then you'll surely love this one too. Without giving anything away- if, after you got to the end of Oryx and Crake, you were left wanting to know more- well, here it is: more.

What I'm reading now:

As predicted in my April post- I have chosen another King book to read next. I'm only a short ways into this book, but man has King grabbed my interest with the predicament he's put his main character in!

Aaaand, since I already posted a picture of them holding up copies of that book in the last book post, I'm just going to put up some slashy pics of them looking adorably like a couple instead. Why? Cuz I want to. That's why. None of these are "manips", as they say in slash-dom (short for manipulations- meaning photo-shopped, etc), these two Treasures from the Universe just go around acting like this for reals. I've said it before, but it bears repeating, they're like a slash fan's dream come true- they pretty much do the slash themselves! None of these are pictures from the book or anything- just the two authors being awesome with each other. *contented sigh*

As for what's up next on the horizon, book-wise.....No specific plans, but will probably pick another King book to read unless something else catches my eye in the mean-time.

Film Review: Thor

The second movie I went to see this past weekend was Thor. This was a really enjoyable movie! I had a blast- it had an interesting plot, great special effects, action, laughs, eye-candy...pretty much everything you could want in a movie like this. It stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Now, he's not really my type, but, I gotta say...dayummm!! He has very beautiful eyes and in the scene where he's shirtless- even I took notice, and I'm definitely not into the muscle-y type of guy. Just as a little treat, for those of you who are:

The movie also stars the gorgeous and sexy Natalie Portman as Thor's human love interest, Sir Anthony Hopkins as his father Odin, and Tom Hiddleston in a really great performance as his brother Loki. Also of note is hottie Jaimie Alexander as Sif (those of you who are into either Norse mythology, or the Marvel comics that feature Thor, will probably know who that character is...I had to consult Wikipedia, lol).

Fun trivia fact: Chris Hemsworth played Captain James T. Kirk's father in the opening scenes of the (amazing!!) 2009 Star Trek movie.

Final rating? An enthusiastic 4 stars! I definitely really liked it! :-)

Film Review: Water for Elephants

This past weekend I enjoyed going to two different movies- the first of which was Water for Elephants. For those who know me, it's not too surprising that I went to see this with my friend who is a total girlie girl (in addition to being one of my exes)....what may be surprising is that I suggested this movie, LOL....I'm not usually big on the so-called "chic flick" romantic movies, but every now and then one catches my eye (Love Actually is one of my favorite movies).

This movie is certainly no Love Actually, but, actually, was pretty good...the Depression-era circus backdrop was beautifully done and reminded me ever so slightly of the show Carnivale. The performances are good, particularly those of Reese Witherspoon (what a cutie!) as the star-attraction horse and elephant show circus beauty (her circus-act costumes are really hot, by the way) and Christoph Waltz (who many will recognize from his Oscar-winning performance as a Nazi in Inglourious Basterds) as her very unpleasant husband who is also the circus' owner. The elephant is a total scene-stealer, ha ha...Unfortunately the movie's ending is a bit...lackluster. I'd say more but I don't want to give any spoilers...Not the best movie of all time but definitely worth watching.

Final rating: I'd give this one 3 and half stars....since Netflix doesn't allow that I rounded down to three. I more than liked it, but I didn't really like it.
